Powerlifting 14. The BEST place to train ... FCPC, Rochdale!
There are several options for places to train for powerlifting. You might prefer to train at home in a garage or basement, or you could train in a gym. It is all down to personal preference, but certainly you need to find somewhere that has the correct facilities and, just as importantly, it needs to be somewhere you are happy because you are going to spend a considerable amount of time there. I was extremely fortunate in that I seem to have stumbled into the perfect place from my point of view. Full Contact Performance Centre on Queensway in Rochdale has a great range of equipment and the staff and members are very laid back and friendly. Try and find me another gym where you will ever find zombies, witches, devils and skeletons training at 7am on Halloween!
It really is a joy to be there, so jumping out of bed at 5.30 in the morning does not seem like a chore. I can't wait to get in and get down to business. Indeed, it is not uncommon for me to be waiting outside when the shutters come up at 7am!
Basically, there is something for everybody, so if you live close enough you should get down and have a look. If you have not already seen my first blog post take a look and see how doing so can significantly change your life for the better!
Another great advantage of training in a gym is that there is a great wealth of knowledge and experience that can be tapped from those around you. This is of course a process of give and take, so I feel it is important that I share my own experiences so that people can learn from my successes and my failures and this series of blogs is in part a means to that end.
Also, everybody who steps foot inside the gym is doing something POSITIVE. In a world and society of such negativity these days, to be surrounded only by positivity can be nothing but a good thing, even if just for an hour or so every day! Moreover, this positive influence can continue beyond the gym. I am now friends on Facebook with several personal trainers and gymaholics who regularly post powerful and positive gym/lifestyle related memes and I do find that these resonate with me throughout the day and help me further develop and maintain my focus! I will start making more of a note of these and will quote some of them in a dedicated blog post at a later date.
There is also the benefit of having people around to spot you on particularly heavy lifts, for example when trying to increase your 1RM bench press. So far I have managed to pin myself to the bench with a heavy barbell once ... before being kindly rescued by Charlotte 'Bomber' Brown (no photo of that one thankfully!).
Finally, powerlifters seem to have a rather infectious enthusiasm for their sport (I believe these blog posts are evidence of that), so it is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, find a training partner should you want to, and to hear about upcoming events that you may not be aware of. Of course, the more diverse the gym the better! At FCPC there is an incredible range of expertise in many different but related disciplines ... it is a great place to train and a great place to learn!
